Hydra, Spetses, Poros, Aegina, Angistri… the islands in the Saronic Gulf make an easy escape from Athens, and are a much loved destination both for weekend escapes and longer holidays. The islands are easy to reach. Aegina is closest to Piraeus – hydrofoils take you to there in half an hour – while the crossing to Spetses, which lies furthest out, takes two hours. Lots of Athenians have weekend and holiday homes on Aegina which is definitely nice, but not as great as the other Saronic Islands. (The competition is fierce!). Hydra is stunning, Spetses is beautiful, and Poros has a lot of charm. (Angistri is the only one where I haven’t been… yet.) It is very easy to move between Poros, Hydra and Spetses, and the three make a perfect combination for some absolutely painless island hopping!
