Paxos, one of the smaller Greek islands in the Ionian Sea, is simply gorgeous, a perfect destination for quiet summer holidays with some great small hotels. Its hills are covered with olive groves, vineyards and pine trees – it’s a really green island – and its rocky coast is dotted with wonderful (mostly pebble) beaches and beautiful little coves, where trees, rather than umbrellas provide shade. There are several colourful villages and fishing ports on the coast, and traditional little hamlets inland, and the atmosphere on the island is mellow and tranquil. This is not an island to go bar hopping or dance through the night, but perfect if you like to have a coffee or a glass of ouzo with some mezedes in a traditional café by the water, go for hikes through the hills, and cool off in a sparkling turquoise sea.
