My first time in Greece was in Corfu. I came with my parents and sister for summer holidays, and I fell in love with the island. The combination of greenery, beautiful beaches, small villages, delicious food and that feeling of hospitality… this, I decided, was it! Some years later, coming back to Greece with my then-boyfriend-now-husband, I started to realise how falling in love with Greek islands isn’t all that hard – it still happens to me all the time – but those green islands in the Ionian Sea… there is something about them! They are definitely are among Greece’s most beautiful.
The best of the Ionian Islands
The beaches of Kefalonia, Lefkada and Zakynthos are the most famous (and stunning indeed), but the smaller pebble beaches of Paxos and Ithaki are gorgeous too. The hilly landscape of Kefalonia and Kefkada are great for walking and hiking, as, actually, are all of the Ionian islands. Corfu and Zakynthos have a few better-to-avoid coastal resorts catering to package deal tourism, and some of the other islands may also have a few spots that get too busy to my taste in the summer, but the general feeling of all Ionian islands remains calm, relaxed and easy-going. On Corfu you can have a gourmet meal in the reputedly best restaurant in Greece, but eating some mezedes, grilled fish and fresh salad on a beach taverna on any of the Ionian islands is a gastronomic experience as well.
