This unpretentious little auberge de charme is housed in one of the oldest silk mansions of Metaxohori (literally “Silk Village”), a peaceful traditional village full of charm, with a central square shaded by immense leafy trees and old stone mansions scattered on verdant mountain slopes. Recently restored, Arhondiko Soulioti now has a second life as a guesthouse. It has eight charming bedrooms with bare stone walls (in some rooms), wooden floors and beamed ceilings (in most rooms), a tasteful combination of traditional local and old-style Indian wooden furniture (in all rooms), and excellent bathrooms. Owner Theodore Souliotis runs his guesthouse together with his sister and young, local staff. Service is particularly friendly. Throughout the day drinks are served in the cosy sitting room by the fire or on the lovely terrace, and for lunch and dinner you can order honest, Greek dishes, all home-cooked with local, fresh produce.

What makes it special to me:

The quiet, off-the beaten track village, and the authentic charm of the guesthouse. The staff were really nice to my kids.

But what you should keep in mind:

There's no lazy couch in the sitting room.

For breakfast you will find a small buffet (7h00 to 11h00). Lunch and dinner are served at the guesthouse as well. The menu features non-fussy traditional food, which is all home-cooked. The choice of places to eat in Metaxohori is very limited; the village taverna offers basic fare.

Arhondiko Soulioti is in a very quiet spot, a few minutes’ walk from the central square of Metaxohiri, a village at the foot of Mount Kissavos (Mount Ossa) in the province of Larissa. It is a beautiful area (a combination of rural, forests, mountains and, a little further, the sea) that has stayed blissfully off the beaten track.

Metaxohori is easy to reach from the Athens-Thessaloniki National Road, and it makes a perfect overnight stop on your way from or to Athens. Take motorway exit Larissa 2 or 3. Follow signs for Agia, and then Metaxohori. The guesthouse is clearly signposted in the village.

Mount Kissavos, also called Mount Ossa, and the area around it, is perfect for those in search of unspoilt nature, traditional villages and also beautiful beaches. It lies just east of the motorway near Larissa and it is very easy to get to, but surprisingly few people do. The Pelion peninsula, a bit further south is the big weekend and holiday destination; Mount Kissavos has stayed off the beaten track.

I stayed in Metaxohori, an old silk village in the foothills of the mountain, which is charming and quiet, its nightlife and shopping facilities limited to one kafenio, one taverna and one tiny, old-fashioned grocery store. The wider area is fantastic for all sorts of outdoor activities (such as walking, hiking, canyoning, rock climbing and mountain biking), while the sea (and a 10 kilometre long beach!) is only 20 minutes or so by car from Metaxohori. A little further north, (after the seaside village of Paliouria) the coastline is stunningly beautiful, with several gorgeous sandy and pebble beaches.

We had a lovely time at this tiny hotel - they were really friendly - it was very hard to find with no real signage from the village despite your email! We rang them in the end and despite very little english we managed to understand each other. The owner drove down the mountain to meet us and then we followed him back. The village itself is charming and the food at the local taverna was super; it isn't an international tourist spot at all (just as we like) there were a few other greek guests there for our 2nd night but other than that it was really quiet.

As expected, the hotel was marvelous. Our room was spacious and very beautiful. Service was friendly, breakfast delicious. I particularly liked the view from the terrace, as well as the location of the hotel. I will highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to experience traditional Greece. Even though we only spent there one night on our way to Kythira, I wished we had more nights to explore the village and the surroundings.
