When Austrian-born Marie Luise Antoniadou came to Poros for the first time, she was so smitten with the island that on the spur of the moment she bought a ramshackle 19th century neo-classical house. It needed a thorough restoration, but that was no problem for Marie Luise who is an architect by profession. Using old building materials and furnishing it with period pieces, she tastefully enhanced the original character of the house, while adding a fresh and contemporary touch with pastel colour schemes and pale wood floors in some of the rooms. She divided Sto Roloï into two apartments and a studio and it became by far the most charming place to stay on Poros. Later on, Marie Luise acquired a few more old farmhouses, which she also restored and turned into self-catering accommodation. The Anemone House and the Little Tower are situated on the west side of the village, a few minutes from the centre, while the Limeri House and Studio are a bit further out, on the southern part of the village, overlooking the narrow strait of sea that separates Poros from the Peloponnese. All are done in Marie Luise’s signature style, an appealing blend of old charm and modern freshness. The houses are wonderful little hideaways: you have privacy; you get the necessary luxury (most bathrooms with hydro-massage, superb mattresses, the Anemone House and the Limeri properties have a small swimming pool); kitchens are well equipped; just like in hotels you get daily maid service; and groceries or even entire meals can be ordered in. Just perfect for uncomplicated island holidays.

What makes it special to me:

Staying at Sto Roloï feels like having your own house on Poros. The combination of fresh-looking interiors, charm and excellent comfort is hard to beat. The views from the Limeri houses are particularly stunning.

But what you should keep in mind:

Three things really:
1) The Garden Apartment and the Studio of the Sto Roloï House do not have much of a view.
2) If you stay at Limeri House or Studio, you have to be prepared for some exercise to get to it – 170 steps uphill. It was great exercise when I was staying here in October, but in the summer I guess you may want to avoid going back home in the middle of the day.
3) The houses more suitable for families than for two couples to share, as the extra beds (junior-sized) are in the living room.

There is a good choice of taverna's and restaurants at walking distance. Meals from one of the best (traditional) restaurants on the island can be brought over. You can also cook 'at home'; you will find a small supermarket, a bakery, a butcher and some other shops at about 5-10 minutes' walk from Limeri (less from the other houses), and you can also have groceries delivered.

Sto Roloï is situated in a cobbled alley in the village of Poros, just below the old bell tower. The waterfront is close by, and there are plenty of places to eat, drink or shop.

The Anemone Residence is in a quiet corner of the village of the island of Poros. There’s a small bakery and an even smaller mini-market less than two minutes on foot, and the centre of the village is just over five minutes’ walk.

The Limeri House and Studio are situated up on the hill, on the outskirts of the village. I found it a great spot: it is relatively quiet, but you don't feel isolated at all. Sitting out on one of the terraces looking out over the sea and the waterfront which is always bustling with life, is a great holiday activity.

The ferries for Poros leave from Piraeus and take one or two hours to get to the island. You can also go by car via the Peloponnese (about 2,5 hours from Athens) and cross at Galatas (the ferry leaves every half hour and the crossing takes a few minutes). You will be met upon arrival at the port. Sto Roloï is just one minute away on foot from where you get off the ferry (up a flight of stairs), the other properties are a bit further.

Separated by a narrow channel from the shores of the Peloponnese, Poros is only a one-hour trip by hydrofoil from the port of Piraeus, but offers a complete change of scenery and a real away-from-it-all feeling. Maybe not as eye-catching as its neighbour Hydra, where during the summer season boatloads of tourists disembark on a daily basis, Poros does have plenty of charm. It is blessed with dense pine tree forests, sheltered beaches (most are pebble beaches with trees for shade and incredibly clear waters) and a picturesque little town, but does not get a lot of tourism.

Poros gives you the rare chance to enjoy island life, while, at the same time, you can also go sightseeing. The ferry puts you across to the Peloponnese in just a few minutes, so if you rent a car, the ancient theatre of Epidavros, the famous Mycenae and the historic town of Nafplio make easy day excursions. Other wonderful daytrips can be made to Hydra, Spetses and Egina, all just short boat rides away.

[...] Another love of ours is Sto Roloi in Poros. Limeri and Anemone are such great villas that the only problem is which one to choose. This year we stayed in Anemone in June an are right now in Limeri.

This was the second time we stayed here, this time in the Garden House and the Studio. Very cosy, calm, comfortable, and once again a very warm welcome by Marie Louise. Good kitchen and we even cooked some meals for the children and had dinner in the garden under the lime tree (we stole some!), very romantic. I also liked it so much to not need a car at all and do everything on foot.

We just love this place and I hope we will be back soon.

Looking to escape some of the busier islands in September, we chose Poros, a short trip by hydrofoil from Athens.

Our decision was also based on reading about Sto Roloi in Small Hotels of Greece. It was a perfect choice.
Sto Roloi’s Terrace Apartment is delightfully furnished, spacious and well-equipped. It has views of Poros harbour and across the water to the mainland.
A short walk away from the bakery the beach and tavernas, Sto Roloi offered everything we needed for an independent and relaxing stay.
Although Poros is a great location from which to explore the mainland and other islands, we were hard pressed to leave Sto Roloi for too long. We will be back.

Marie Luise, thank you for sharing some of the culture and traditions of this great country. But countries are made of stone and dirt and buildings are made of brick and mortar. What makes the difference is the people. Those who built the houses, who worked the land. They are the ones who made it what it is today and who gave it their soul.
You and the Poros team are part of this accomplishment.
Congratulations and merci!

We spent last evening together telling how wonderful our stay in Anemone House was but for the other readers here it is again:
We have now travelled 3 weeks throughout Greece and this place was definitely the most comfortable and Poros a very charming and intimate little island.

Just a quick note to let you know that not only did everything fall together as planned, but also that everything was absolutely perfect!! The accommodations at the Sto Roloi were more than I ever expected. The view of the water and the mountains from the sitting room made the place come alive!! Marie Louise is an absolute doll and her housekeeper Janeta is equally charming. The people of Poros and the nearby islands are so welcoming, I cannot recall ever feeling so comfortable and safe in any foreign country.

A very big thank you for a wonderful holiday at Sto Roloi on the island of Poros. The garden apartment which we stayed in was superb in all respects. It’s location in the old town was stunning. We could not have wished for a better 7 days on our first holiday with our 10 month old son. Please can you pass on our appreciation to Marie Louise and all her colleagues who made our stay so enjoyable. Thank you again for your assistance in helping us to choose the accommodation.
