Maria and Giorgos’ charming complex of houses overlooking the sea and the coast of Kardamyli is a wonderful, peaceful little getaway. Set in well-kept gardens, the stone-built houses are lovely to look at, and a quiet and friendly ambience pervades the whole place. NoTos consists of a total of 14 apartments and open-plan studios, each one with a fully equipped kitchen and a terrace or veranda. Inside, everything looks fresh and friendly, pleasant and unpretentious. The interiors are done in an unfussy, tasteful style with soft colours, wooden ceilings, hand-designed (and handmade) pine furniture, and simple, slightly arty decoration. They have a clean and airy feel and are just perfect for uncomplicated holidays. There is no restaurant on the premises, but you will eat extremely well in Kardamily in “Lela’s Taverna”, a definite “classic” in the area, run by Giorgos’ mother.

What makes it special to me:

The generally fresh and clean, 'sunny' feeling of the place, and the wonderful owners. And the views…

But what you should keep in mind:

You have to be prepared for a bit of a walk, uphill, to get back from the beach.

You can order breakfast any time you want, and it will be brought to your house. All studios and apartments come with a correctly equipped kitchen (without an oven though; just two cooking elements) so you can also, easily, prepare breakfast and some meals yourself. There are several great restaurants nearby, especially Elies (700 metres from Notos), a charming beachside taverna run by Giorgos’ brother, and Lela’s taverna in Kardamyli, a definite ‘classic’ in the village, which was run for over twenty years by Giorgos’ mother, but was recently taken over by Giorgos' eldest son.

Hotel NoTos is situated on the hillside outside the coastal village of Kardamyli in northern Mani. There’s a nice pebbly beach nearby (about 600 m) and the village lies just a little further.

Kardamyli is situated about 35 km from Kalamata. (The town is no more than three-hour by car from Athens, mostly highway, and in summer there are international charter flights to Kalamata.) To get to NoTos, you have to drive from the village in the direction of Kalamata. The first kilometre of road is a straight stretch. Just before the road bends to the right, you will see a sign for the hotel to the left. NoTos is at the end of this 800-metre dead-end unpaved road.

Mani is a rugged ‘middle finger’ in the southern Peloponnese. Its centuries-old stone towers uniquely mark the harsh landscape and remind one and all that this was the only part of mainland Greece that until the 18th century resisted Ottoman rule. Maniates, men and women alike, have always been known for their stubborn character and fiercely independent spirit. Some hair-raising stories exist not only about their ferocious battles against the Ottoman rulers, but also about bloody family feuds.

A visit to the most southern part the region, the inner Mani, is always a somewhat mystical experience which, fortunately, due to its remoteness, you are not likely to have to share with busloads of fellow travellers. Just like its people, the landscape of this southernmost part of the Greek mainland comes across as stark and forbidding, but the spectacular coastlines and barren mountain ranges, dotted with small clusters of fort-like tower-houses, never fail to captivate those passing through.

The inner Mani is an area to simply take in, rather than to run around touring site to site. Wandering around its many stone tower villages is a great experience (Vathia is a must). On the west coast, close to the main (village-sized) town, Aeropoli, the caves of Pirgos Dirou are among the best known in Greece and a definite must-see. Aeropoli is a charming place, fairly quiet during the day, and more lively at night. Go for a swim in the beautiful Limeni bay to its north, and have a meal by the water. Further south on the west coast is Gerolimenas, a tiny and charming port, not striking in terms of architecture (except for hotel Kyrimai) but a magical spot nevertheless. All the way south, there are some nice coves and beaches.

On the east coast you should make a stop at the little seaside town of Gythio, which has a good choice of fish restaurants by the water. The drive down the coastal road is beautiful, and you will come across several good beaches, some with sand, others with pebbles. Keep in mind though that this intriguing peninsula is not the place for beach bums, but for those who like to walk, explore and discover in peace and quiet. Spring is the best time of the year for this, and is indeed more of a ‘high season’ than the summer.

In contrast to the untamed wild beauty of the Inner Mani, the Outer Mani that lies to its north is much more friendly and lush in appearance. Set against the backdrop of the Taigetos mountain range, the area is one of the most scenic parts of Greece. The landscape is marked by hills covered with olive groves and punctuated by cypresses, lovely tower house villages, wild oleanders lining the winding road south, tiny Byzantine churches, and a beautiful coastline with emerald green waters. It has remained blissfully unspoilt and is still relatively undiscovered – the tourism that makes it to this out-of-the-way corner of Greece is generally of the ‘good kind’: people looking for natural beauty, tranquillity and a few sights rather than beach entertainment and nightlife. The opportunities for walking and hiking are numerous, and routes are clearly indicated by different coloured marks. They vary from easy half- to one-hour walks in the foothills of the Taigetos Mountains, to more serious hikes, notably the six-hour trek through the Viros Gorge. Kardamyli is the obvious base from where to explore the area: it is a pretty and peaceful village by the sea, with a good pebble beach.

We fell in love with this beautiful hotel when attending a flute/guitar concert in November 2008. Now we spent the first half of January in this lovely place. Due to the engaged personal support by the boss, Giorgo, and his assistent Xenophon (Greek: the voice of the stranger) we had a highly relaxing time in spite the austerity of the season. Thank you. My husband and I had too short a stay at Notos just 2 days.  Still, we appreciated the calm, the views, and the comforts.  Best of all, notos brought us to the town of Kardamyli, a "reunion" with the work of a beloved writer, Patrick Leigh Fermour, who has a home there, and exposure to history and natural beauty that is everywhere around Kardamyli.

We loved the hotel very much. Its location is superb. The service was perfect. We very much enjoyed the silence of the environment, the breakfast on the terrace, the evenings with the full moon. We appreciate they have build the hotel by using the rocks of the mountain of the place itself. They were very friendly.

My husband and I had wonderful experiences staying at Heliophos and Notos. Heliophos was so beautiful, peaceful and romantic, a perfect location and we loved the eclectic decor in the atmospheric accommodations. Notos was very comfortable and well-appointed, with easy access to the sea and plentiful sites and activities in an area of spectacular beauty.
