This guesthouse just around the corner from the Byzantine city of Mystras made me feel like completely refurbishing and redecorating my own home. A small, cosy sitting room and seven spacious rooms and suites are done a contemporary country style, an inspiring match between tradition and design, crispness and cosiness, as well as aesthetics, comfort and functionality. Earthy colours, natural fabrics, charming details, comfy beds, light and space. Indeed, I’d love to live in a place done this way. Each room has its own, countryside-inspired theme – olives, branches, flowers, sky etc. – and it’s all done with subtlety and creativity. The rooms are spread over three stone houses set in lovely gardens. While strictly speaking you’re in a village, the feeling is rural – you see more greenery than houses. It’s a beautiful setting on a mountain slope overlooking the plain of Sparta; the views are fantastic. From some of the rooms you can see the remains Mystras.

You will be welcomed by young and radiant Asimina, who runs the guesthouse smoothly and efficiently. She’s fluent in English and you will enjoy her company.

What makes it special to me:

It is the entire package that sets this guesthouse apart: the aesthetics and comfort of the accommodation, the perfect hostess Asimina, the views, and of course having the remains of the Byzantine city of Mystras practically at your doorstep.

But what you should keep in mind:

The sound insulation between some of the rooms is not perfect. Also, for winter visits, keep in mind that the common sitting room is small and not really suitable to hang out with a larger group, should you come together with friends.

You will find a breakfast form in your room. Sounds like the way they do it in the big hotels? Not quite. Asimina just likes to have an idea of what you are in the mood for in the morning. You give her the form the night before, and she will appear on your doorstep the next morning, with a big basket filled with goodies (and you will wonder if you really did order that much) and an even bigger smile on her face. Picking through the basket's contents will make you feel like a small child on Christmas day, special and spoiled, wonderful.
For lunch and dinner you can walk, or drive, up to the taverna Chromata (same owner as the guesthouse) which serves seasonally varied dishes. The menu looks traditional Greek, but the food is more refined and creative than what you get in your average Greek taverna. You can opt for simple dishes like keftedes (little meatballs) with fries, or go for something more ‘special’ like rabbit in sweet mustard sauce or linguini with wild mushrooms and Parmesan cheese.

The guesthouse in Pikoulianika, a small village built on a mountain slope overlooking the plain of Sparta, very close to the Byzantine city of Mystras. It is the perfect location if you want to visit the site, as one of the entrances is one kilometer away, a pleasant stroll really. The great thing about the spot is that despite the proximity of Mystras, it is really quiet. Most people who come to visit the site, come from Sparta and the new village of Mystras, and don’t venture any further.

From Sparta, follow signs for Mystras and then continue towards Pikoulianika (just a few km). The village doesn’t have much of a centre, but as you pass it, you will see the guesthouse on your left. It’d be hard to miss.

The remains of the Byzantine fortress-state of Mystras make up one of Greece’s most worthwhile historic sites. You can do what most tourists do: go and visit them for the day, perhaps stay one night, and then move on to the next site or to the beach. But you can also stay longer and have a different experience altogether. The ruined 13th century city of is a wonderful place to explore and quite frankly, if you only give it a few hours you will miss out on a lot. But the surroundings are gorgeous as well, and you will enjoy it all a lot more if you take your time.

If the weather isn’t too hot, allow yourself a full day to stroll through the cobbled paths of Mystras. You will need some time to visit the monasteries and beautifully frescoed chapels and churches (many of which have been restored) and the remains of the fortress on top of the mountain. Just be careful to not do what I did the first time I visited Mystras. It was in the middle of the summer and I went in the middle of the day. It was hot, the walks were steep, and I ended up more being more interested in finding shade and cold water than admiring my surroundings. So if you do go during the summer, make an early start, take a long siesta, and go again at the end of the day, or the next. The second time I visited Mystras on a crisp winter day. There were almost no other visitors, and it was a magical experience. If you have the change, go off-season too.

The Taygetos Mountains, east of Mystras, are also worth spending time. It’s a great area for walking and hiking with rivers, gorges, caves, small villages, churches and monasteries to explore. Rock climbers rave about the Langada climbing park, a few km from the village of Trypi.

Read here what others said about Guesthouse Mazaraki
We thought Mazaraki was our favorite of the three hotels from your site we stayed at (Mazaraki, Kazakou and llion). Hospitality of the manager (Mina) was superb. Kazakou and lion were also very nice. Thanks for your great selection of hotels.

We had a magical stay at Mazaraki. The view over the valley to the mountains is breathtaking, the stone houses are stunningly beautiful with attention to every detail, including a delicious breakfast. Staying here was an incredibly aesthetic experience and the welcome was warm. The open fire on an inclement day was simply gorgeous. To be so close to the extraordinary Byzantine town of the Mystras was simply wonderful. The Mystras was a highlight of our travels and staying at Mazaraki is an experience not to be missed!
