If it wasn’t for its unusual colour palette (sea green and salmon!), you’d probably mistake Kyveli Suites for an ordinary pension, with a tiny reception area and bedrooms good for sleeping only. But that’s not what it’s like. You welcomed by the young and lovely owners, Leonidas Lambrinakis, a painter and mosaic artist and his sister Ioanna, who run their guesthouse in a way that allows you to be fully independent, while adding at the same time a warm and personal touch with their presence. Nine suites offer a level of comfort that approaches luxury, with a comfortable sitting corner (though small), superb beds and large and modern bathrooms. There’s no breakfast service, but mini-bars in the suites are stocked with some (complimentary) provisions so you don’t have to go out on an empty stomach in the morning.

What makes it special to me:

Leonardo and Ioanna are incredibly helpful and welcoming, and fascinating conversation partners. The location and the comfort are other big plusses.

But what you should keep in mind:

The long and narrow shape of some of the rooms is awkward. A real breakfast would be nice…

There is no common room or terrace to sit out. Each suite has its own sitting corner, and there are a lot of nice places to have a drink nearby.

There is no breakfast service, but the mini-bars in the suites are stocked with some (complimentary) provisions so you don’t have to go out with an empty stomach in the morning. If you want a larger breakfast, you will find nice cafés just a short walk away. For lunch and dinner you have a great choice of restaurants in Nafplio.

The Kyveli Suites are in two adjacent 150-year-old buildings in a narrow street close to the seaside boulevard in the old town of Nafplio. It is reasonably quiet, though in the summer you get some noise from people sitting out on terraces in the street.

The drive from Athens to Nafplio takes less than two hours. Follow the motorway to via Korinthos towards Tripoli. The exit for Nafplio (and Argos) is about 22 km after Korinthos. As you approach Nafplio (about 30 km after you get off the motorway), follow the signs for the old town. At the beginning of the old town, turn left into Singrou St and then right again into Amalias, where you will usually find space to park your car. (There are also several public parking places at just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.) Take the second or third street on your right – Vas. Alexandrou St, where the hotel is, runs parallel to Amalias and is two blocks down towards the sea.

Steeped in history, Nafplio is one of Greece’s most fascinating towns. Its development dates back to the Neolithic period and through the centuries it has been under Minoan, Roman, Byzantine, Franc, Venetian and Turkish rule. In 1828, it became the first capital of the modern Greek state until 1834, when the administration was moved to Athens. Today the Venetian influence remains most apparent in the historic part of town, with the odd mosque as the testimony of the Turkish presence.

Nafplio is barely two hours’ drive from Athens, and greatly appreciated as a mini-break destination. It’s not hard to see why. Apart from its beautiful architecture and its great setting by the sea, it also has an excellent choice of restaurants, bars, cafés, boutiques and shops selling art and antiques. The atmosphere is peaceful and easy-going; compared to Athens, it feels like a village.

The old town of Nafplio is first of all a place to just stroll around, to take in the unique atmosphere and discover its little shops, art galleries and restaurants. There are several small museums worth a visit (the archaeological museum on Syntagma Square; the Folk Art Museum displaying a beautiful collection of Greek costumes; the komboloi museum for worry-beads!). You should of course visit the old Venetian fort on top of Palamidi and the Acronafplia battlements that lie beneath it. In the summer you can cross by boat to the fortified island of Bourtzi, in the middle of the bay.

If you stay a little longer in Nafplio, you can use the town as a base to visit Mycenea and the ancient theatre of Epidavros. There, you can even catch a summer festival performance of an ancient Greek tragedy.

Kyveli Suites were marvellous. The suites themselves were modern and very comfortable, with attention to many small details that made our stay there special. They were also located in a perfect part of town. And the proprietor(s) were extremely hospitable and helpful. I cannot imagine staying anywhere else, if I were in Napflio again (which I would like to be).

We had a wonderful stay in all the hotels in Greece. People were very helpful and welcoming. We enjoy best the hotel in the Mani area and the mountain. The hotel in Gerolimenas was wonderful just to look at. The service was perfect. The breakfast in the morning was a must with a large variety of different delicacies from the area. The children were very happy and felt welcome as well. We stayed for dinner one evening and the food was very good as well as the service. Because our children are already 14 and 12, it was easy to wait 8.00 pm for dinner but it could be late for younger children to have dinner.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Kyveli Suites in Nafplio.  Beautiful decor, fantastic bathroom, great location and wonderful hosts.  Leonidas is just the hotelier everyone should experience during their visit to Greece.  Not only does he put his heart into his hotel, but we could have spent an entire afternoon in conversation with him.

Kyveli Suites is a gem. We enjoyed a top floor room with a terrace which was beautifully cared for, comfortable, and immaculately clean. The elegant and spacious marble bathroom was also very welcome. The proprietor was very kind and took the time to chat with us and give us local advice and information whenever possible. My husband interacted with some of the desk staff as well and found them to be extremely helpful and polite. We were delighted with the opportunity to see Nafplio and the surrounding attractions and, as at Kazakou, we would certainly stay at Kyveli Suites if we were visiting that area again.

All three hotels (Kyveli, Kazakou and Generali) were incredibly wonderful. We would gladly be a personal reference for each of the three. It is unusual to say that hotels became highlights of your trip but these owner occupied and personally involved hotels certainly did. Thank you!

We just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you what a wonderful stay we had with Kyveli Suites in Nafplio. The room was very lovely with a balcony that had a view of the Palamidi Fortress and in a great location in the old town. But what makes the place truly special is the hospitality of the owner Leo and his assistant Dimitra. They could not have been more kind and helpful during our stay. It was one of the highlights of our 2 week stay in Greece and we look forward to going back.

In Nafplio, Leo at Kyveli Suites will be remembered by the family for years to come. What a charming character! We loved talking to him. We "loved what he'd done with the place." (I especially was blown away by the heated towel rack in the bathroom. My husband, who has done a lot of home remodeling, couldn't get over the marble work.) We loved the entire town.
