When Eleni Antonopoulou and Stathis Triantafyllou built a stone house in the mountains of the Peleponnese their idea was to use it for weekends and have friends over. As it turned out, they enjoyed having guests so much that they eventually turned the house into a small hotel, without however giving it any of the typical hotel ‘looks’. They did the bedrooms and suites in an attractive country style with wood or stone-paved floors, bare stone walls, and traditional and antique furniture (plus a working fireplace in some rooms); each one is different. There is also a cosy living/dining room where weekenders enjoy home cooked meals and relax by the fire. Generally, Helydorea has a truly pleasant and welcoming feel to it, especially during the holiday periods and weekends, when Stathis and Eleni are there to personally welcome their guests.
What makes it special to me:
The cosy rooms and suites, the pleasant, family atmosphere.
But what you should keep in mind:
The service is not always perfect in low-season, when the owners are not there.

Hotel Helydorea does not have a restaurant, but in the evening you can usually get a home-cooked meal. (If you arrive on a weekday, it is better to ask for it in advance.) There are also several places to eat in the village. For breakfast you will find a buffet (from 8h00 to 11h00) with a good variety during weekends and holidays, while on weekdays the choice is a bit more limited. |

Hotel Helydorea is situated in the mountains of the northern Peloponnese, in the village of Trikala. It is a quiet location, but there are several restaurants and café’s very close by. |

Follow the national road between Patras and Korinthos. Turn off at a town called Xilokastro (about 30 km from Korinthos or 105 km from Patras) and follow the road signs for Trikala. The hotel is on your left in Mesea Trikala (middle Trikala, there also are Ano, or upper, and Kato, or lower, Trikala) about 24 km from where you get off the national road. |

When, in the late 1990s, I first visited the village of Trikala in the mountains of the northern Peloponnese, there wasn’t much to it. It was just a little village (actually, three villages, as Trikala is divided in a lower, middle and upper part) in a beautiful area, with a limited choice of places to eat and stay. Hotel Helydorea was the main reason people (including myself) came here for weekends.
