Ano Poroia lies on the old caravan route between Constantinople and Monastiri, and Viglatoras was originally built as a hani, a travellers’ inn with space for camels on the ground floor. After camels were replaced by other means of transport and the route was no longer used, it became a family home, until Stelios and Phylli converted it into an inn again. “Perfect” is really the only way to describe it. When I arrived on a winter day, I was invited into the living room, where the fire was going, my favourite music was playing, and I was spoiled with tea and a home baked chocolate cake. I had a room done in an elegant traditional style, combining the intimate atmosphere typical of a guesthouse with the comfort you usually only find in luxurious hotels. Breakfast the next day was a feast: a parade of warm bread, perfectly boiled eggs, delicious homemade pies and sweets, and fresh orange juice. Simply perfect!

What makes it special to me:

The welcome, the care, the comfort, the lovely owners, the breakfast…

But what you should keep in mind:

The neighbouring houses lack charm (oh well…).

A really great breakfast is served until 12h30. You will be treated to delicious traditional pies, warm bread with marmalades, perfectly boiled eggs, home-baked cakes and fresh juice. There are several restaurants at walking distance where you can go for lunch and dinner.

Viglatoras is in Ano Poroia, a charming village at the foot of Mount Kerkini close to the border with Bulgaria. It is a great spot to enjoy the splendid nature around Lake Kerkini as well as the mountains (no ski resort at hand, so it’s quiet!).

Ano Poroia is at an easy driving distance from Thessaloniki (about 100 km). You follow signs for Kilkis and Lake Doirani, and about 28 km after the turn-off to Lake Doirani, you turn left towards Kato Poroia and Ano Poroia. Viglatoras is on the parallel road you will see beneath the central square. There is a sign at the entrance of the village.

This country still has so many hidden corners: mountains where you can hike for hours without ever bumping into another human being, charming little villages where time seems to have come to a standstill, lakes that serve as a safe haven for some of the rarest bird species rather than motor boats… the list goes on and on.

A perfect example is the village of Ano Poroia in the northern province of Serres, close to the border with Bulgaria. It is situated at the foot of Mount Belles, at an altitude of 400 m, from where it has sweeping views over Lake Kerkini that lies below it. The artificially created lake and the adjacent (nature protected) area support a rich bird population. Even though over the past years it has become quite well known among Greeks and a few modest tourist lodgings have opened near the lake, it is still definitely a destination that is off the beaten track.

Lake Kerkini is one of the few examples of a man-made intervention that has become a great ecological success. Dams built in the 1930s and in later years have broadened this lake and it now serves as a safe haven for 227 species of birds. In places the lake is covered with water-lilies while amongst the forests along the riverside a wild herd of buffalo roams.

I was at Viglatoras in May 2005 with my love. He is a Greek man and he chose the place for us to be for some days. We were welcomed very nicely and breakfast was great. We had a very nice time, actually there was no time, like more places in Greece. It was there he asked me to be his partner for life. That made it even more special and it could not have been in a better place.

Suite Pandora, Oresti and Viglatoras were great: excellent reception by the owners of those hotels, very warm people, ready to help you and to advise you for anything. Viglatoras: for me, one of the best. Very nice people, high quality of the reception, room very beautiful, food delicious. Located in a typical small village where the life seems good.
