This family-run hotel in the historical district of Edessa stands out among the traditional stone buildings surrounding it for its soft-colours and immaculate state. From the outside, it looks utterly charming and inviting. Inside, it has indeed a truly warm and cosy feel. The style is traditional, but it has an unmistakably feminine touch to it. There are two sitting rooms - one on the first floor that is decorated in a colourful traditional style and another on the ground floor - a truly intimate space with bare stone and soft blue walls. It has a snug sitting corner by the fire and a few wooden tables where in the morning you will be served a rich breakfast by Anastasia Salachora, the radiant hostess, and her two gorgeous daughters. The eight bedrooms are not big, but ever so romantic, with walls painted in soft shades and antique brass beds topped by embroidered sheets and soft velvety blankets.

What makes it special to me:

The warm family atmosphere and the gracious hostesses, and their famous breakfast!

But what you should keep in mind:

The bedrooms are smallish.

A really good breakfast (fresh juice, homemade jams, boiled or scrambled eggs, pies, yogurt, fresh fruits and cake…) is served from 7h00 to 11h00 in the cosy ground-floor sitting room of the guesthouse. For lunch and dinner you’ll find several traditional places nearby, and you can also walk to the waterfalls and take the cliff-side elevator down, to have a meal in a trendy restaurant in a converted rope-weaving factory.

Hotel Varosi is in a quiet street in the historical district Edessa, a small town in northern Greece, located on the edge of a more than 300 metres-high plateau. It is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the spectacular waterfalls (right in the centre of town!) that Edessa is known for.

Edessa is halfway on the road between Thessaloniki (80 km – an easy drive) and Florina (78 km over a beautiful, but winding road). The road passes through Edessa, and as you enter the town, you should look out for signs for the waterfalls. Follow these until you reach the sports stadium, take a right and then twice a left, and you will see a sign for the hotel.

The town of Edessa enjoys an exceptional setting in the foothills of Mount Vermion, on the edge of a plateau more than 300 m high. A maze of streams runs through it, leading into a (natural) waterfall park, right beside the quiet, historical district of the town. The falls are quite spectacular and have made the little Macedonian town popular with day-trippers. Apart from the waterfalls, one of the main attractions of Edessa is that it is an excellent base for outdoor activities. Just hop in your car and you’ll find mountains for hiking, biking, climbing or horse-riding and rivers great for trekking, kayaking and rafting. If you come in the winter, you can choose from three ski-centres at about an hour’s drive from the town. A half (or full) day excursion to make from Edessa is to Vergina, where you can visit the stunning archaeological finds in the tomb of King Philip II of Macedonia, the father of Alexander the Great.

On arrival at Edessa we had difficulty in finding the hotel because the road we were directed up was closed! We asked a gentleman directions and bless him he hopped on his motor scooter and led us there. The hotel Varosi was delightful, the breakfast wonderful and Mother and two girls could not have done more for us. As we did not go out full days they made us very at home and were very kind to my friend of 89 years. She did find it a little dark as she has failing eyesight. I would certainly recommend the Hotel to any visitors to Greece.

I was totally happy with my stay at the Hotel Varesi. The family were more than welcoming and took wonderful care of me, both in terms of the service in the hotel itself. The breakfasts were magnificent, the rooms a little small, but spotlessly clean and very thoughtfully and tastefully decorated. In fact everything you said in your page was what I experienced there. On top of that the whole family went out of their way to welcome me, from taking me on the Easter parade through the town on Saturday to inviting all the guests to take part in a " midnight Easter feast", to taking me to a nearby village on Easter Monday to take part in the traditional Easter festivities there. I had a truly wonderful stay and can't say how happy I am to have booked it. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

We loved our stay at the Varosi Hotel in Edessa. The hotel is very quaint and has lots of character. Our pretty room with its shuttered windows was clean, comfortable and had private facilities. We were made to feel very welcome by the family and very much at home. Breakfast in the morning was impossibly generous, including juice, thick Greek yogurt, eggs, fresh bread, piles of pastries, toasted sandwiches and endless pots of coffee. The hotel is in an excellent position in the heart of the old district. We could easily walk to the waterfalls, Edessa's main attraction and to the main shopping area, restaurants and cafes. Edessa is a pretty town overlooking the Thessaloniki plains. There is a small archaeological site down on the plains, also within walking distance of the hotel- the entry is free. The much larger and more famous site of ancient Pella is about an hour's drive.  The streets around the hotel are narrow and cobbled but it was possible to park our hire car safely very close by. I would recommend this charming hotel to anyone looking for a taste of traditional Greece - but with all the comforts of home.
