This almost 200-year-old building used to be a travellers’ inn where pilgrims and traders would spend the night while on their way to the Holy Mount Athos. Recently restored by the architect owners (the Alexandrou brothers) it is now an exquisite guesthouse that feels like a warm and hospitable home. It offers a rare balance between cosy/traditional and elegant/stylish. Superb timbered ceilings, refined wall paintings, antique furniture and beautiful details throughout – every element reveals perfection. Bedrooms are utterly charming. There are six rooms in the main house, and four more in an adjacent stone mansion dating from 1924. Dinners are served in the inviting ground-floor sitting/dining room of the original inn. The dishes are traditional Greek, and of top quality.

What makes it special to me:

The incredible care for detail and the good food.

But what you should keep in mind:

The bedrooms facing the road get some traffic noise (but they do have double glazing).

The Alexandrou Traditional Inn is in the centre of Arnea, a small and pretty town in the mountains of Halkidiki in northern Greece.  You can drive all the way to the inn, and parking normally shouldn't be a problem.

Arnea is at a very easy driving distance from Thessaloniki (just 70 km away), from where you should follow signs for Halkidiki, Polygiros and Arnea. You will find the Alexandrou Traditional Inn on the main road through Arnea, on a small square opposite the town hall.

The area is mountainous and green, and ever so pretty. It’s hikers’ paradise. The town itself is known for its beautiful traditional architecture and certainly worth a visit. At just 3 km from Arnea, you can explore the ruins of an ancient civilisation – Profitis Ilias Hill – with a recently excavated acropolis. To go for a swim you have to drive a little further; the nearest beaches are at about 25-30 km away. Make a daytrip to the north-western shores of Sithonia, the middle peninsula of Halkidiki and you will find wonderful sandy beaches.

The most interesting place in the area of course is Holy Mount Athos, the world’s oldest surviving monastic community. Keep in mind though that it has strict admittance policies and you can’t just drop in for a visit. Women are simply not allowed (!) and men have to go through an extensive application procedure (only ten non-orthodox visitors are allowed per day and they have to have a good reason for their visit – “just curious” won’t do it). Don’t despair: from Ouranopolis (about one hour by car from Arnea), you can take a boat trip around the peninsula and admire the monasteries from the sea. It is worth it.
