Villa de Loulia is a 200-year-old Venetian-style mansion set in a garden full of flowers and fruit trees, with shady sitting corners, sun beds scattered over a beautifully kept lawn, and a large swimming pool. Inside it is decorated and furnished with style and restraint. Bedrooms are done in a simple, elegant style, with carefully chosen colour schemes and mostly antique furniture. But there is more to this little hotel than meets the eye. The Mataraga family run their property in a spontaneous and enthusiastic way and have created an easygoing, friendly atmosphere. Meals are something to look forward to. For breakfast you find a delicious spread of local and homemade products and later in the day you can order a snack or a salad with ingredients harvested straight from the garden. Candle-lit dinners are served by the pool. Beautifully tasting dishes are made from fresh village products; this is traditional cuisine at its best!

What makes it special to me:

The easty-going atmosphere, and also garden, the pool, the music, the food…

But what you should keep in mind:

Only a few rooms have their private space to sit out, and some of the ground-floor rooms have not much of a view.

A daily varied breakfast is served from 8h00 onwards, with mostly local and homemade products: fresh bread, excellent jams, village eggs, yogurt, fruits, juices and sweet treats. Later during the day you can order a snack or a salad (with ingredients harvested straight from Villa de Loulia’s own garden), or walk over to one of the nearby restaurants. Candle-lit dinners are served on the terrace by the pool. Prepared by the family, the dishes are a praise to everything pure and fresh and a celebration of traditional cuisine at its best.

Villa de Loulia is situated in Peroulades, a peaceful and traditional coastal village on the far north-western tip of the island of Corfu. It is about five minutes on foot from Logas beach, famous for its glorious sunsets.

There are several daily flights from Athens to Corfu. If you come from abroad, you may find a direct flight. If you come by car, you will cross from Igoumenitsa (the ferry ride takes about one hour – several ferries a day). The village of Peroulades is at the north-western tip of Corfu. From Corfu town, follow the road signs for Sidari, and then continue towards Peroulades. Villa de Loulia is on your left as you enter the village. The drive takes about 45 minutes.

If you have to describe the island of Corfu in a few words, you could say it is a bit like Tuscany, but with the sea all around it. Take the rolling landscapes, vineyards and olive groves interspersed with cypresses, dozy villages and old manor houses of Tuscany, add beautiful bays, sandy beaches, turquoise waters and cliffs and rock formations, and you have Corfu. While the coastline is absolutely stunning (though parts are so popular that they have developed into small tourist ghettos you should definitely avoid!), the inland also makes Corfu really special. It is green, laid-back, quiet and unspoilt. The island’s capital ranks among the most beautiful towns in Greece. It has a charming old centre, impressive town squares and two historic fortresses.

To me, Corfu is a place to enjoy simple pleasures, like a walk in the hills, a drink on a village square or some grilled fish by the sea. There are beautiful beaches and places to swim. Enough to keep me happy for weeks. The island, however, caters to all tastes: you can play golf (there’s an 18-hole course at Ropa Valley), see a cricket match at the Spianada esplanade and have dinner at Etrusco, one of Greece’s finest (Italian) restaurants, and you can also tan away on organised beaches, take your kids to the Aqualand Waterpark, have Chinese or Tex-Mex for dinner and go disco-hopping at night. Fortunately, you can skip all that as well!

Read here what others said about Villa de Loulia

We had an absolutely fantastic week’s holiday at Villa De Loulia thank you very much. The staff, the facilities and the overall 1st class service was amazing. From the minute you arrive you are made to feel that nothing is too much trouble. As I am such a fussy eater I felt it would be hard to find suitable food but this was not to be of a concern during our stay as home cooked meals of my choice with home grown and extremely fresh ingredients were chosen with the chef each morning and prepared at a time to suit our daily plans. Also the friendly feeling that exists you could not buy it is due to owner and staff who naturally create a homely feel in pure luxury. Watching the swift like birds swoop and skim the pool was breath taking and made wonderful photographs. The variety of music played gently around the pool was a marvellous selection to suit all from Enya to Frank Sinatra and to suit all cultures I would like to spread the word but also keep it a secret so it remains just as perfect as it is now… Also Alexandros took over all enquires regarding our lost suitcase. He talked to the airport and arranged it to be delivered to the hotel, taking all the stress of phone calls etc. I would recommend 100% this hotel to anybody who is looking for tranquillity and a truly 1st class experience in an off the beaten track hotel, witnessing local life on your doorstep. Thank you again
