This magnificent 200-year-old family estate was used for olive and wine production until Nikos Velianitis turned it into an exclusive hotel. Spacious rooms and suites are in the buildings where the stables and the olive press used to be. They are furnished with fabulous family heirloom pieces and tastefully adorned with big candles, dried flowers and baskets with books and magazines. The Presidential Suite (three bedrooms, a sitting/dining room and an office) occupies the first floor of the mansion itself. Nikos wants his guests to experience a country lifestyle of times past while at the same time enjoying contemporary luxury. So you could simply enjoy the peace and quiet, go for walks and do some horseback riding, but you can also play a game of tennis and tan on one of the teak sun-beds next to the pool while sipping cocktails. An absolutely amazing brunch is served by the pool or in the mansion’s dining room.

What makes it special to me:

I love the atmosphere at this family estate. It's a little rough around the edges here and there, but the décor is stylish, the gardens are beautiful and the swimming pool is very very inviting. Brunch is straight from heaven.

But what you should keep in mind:

Some bathrooms and a few aspects of the rooms could do with a make-over (though mainly from an aesthetic point of view). Shame there is no dinner…

There’s no breakfast at the Pelecas Country Club; they do a lavish brunch instead. It is served until 12h30 by the pool or in the old mansion. After a spread of omelettes, sausages, savoury pies, salads, crêpes, yogurt, fresh fruits, cakes and sweets, you will probably to skip lunch. For dinner you will have to drive a few kilometres to the village or to the town of Corfu.

The Pelecas Country Club enjoys a peaceful setting in the countryside of the island of Corfu, in the midst of an olive tree estate. The nearest village (Pelekas) is four km away, and there’s a beach at five km. The island’s capital is at nine km.

There are several daily flights from Athens to Corfu. If you come from abroad, you may also find a direct flight. If you come by car, you will cross from Igoumenitsa (there are several ferries a day and the crossing takes about one hour). To get to the Pelecas Country Club, you should follow signs for Paleokastritsa and Pelekas from the town of Corfu. About seven kilometres from the town, you turn left towards the village Pelekas. The entrance to the Pelecas Country Club is on your right, about two kilometres after this turn. Last time I went, the sign had disappeared, so the best I can tell you is to look out for two red brick pillars and an iron entry gate, and to have your mobile phone and the phone number of the hotel at hand. If, by the way, you don’t want your arrival to go unnoticed, keep in mind there is a helicopter pad as well!

If you have to describe the island of Corfu in a few words, you could say it is a bit like Tuscany, but with the sea all around it. Take the rolling landscapes, vineyards and olive groves interspersed with cypresses, dozy villages and old manor houses of Tuscany, add beautiful bays, sandy beaches, turquoise waters and cliffs and rock formations, and you have Corfu. While the coastline is absolutely stunning (though parts are so popular that they have developed into small tourist ghettos you should definitely avoid!), the inland also makes Corfu really special. It is green, laid-back, quiet and unspoilt. The island’s capital ranks among the most beautiful towns in Greece. It has a charming old centre, impressive town squares and two historic fortresses.

To me, Corfu is a place to enjoy simple pleasures, like a walk in the hills, a drink on a village square or some grilled fish by the sea. There are beautiful beaches and places to swim. Enough to keep me happy for weeks. The island, however, caters to all tastes: you can play golf (there’s an 18-hole course at Ropa Valley), see a cricket match at the Spianada esplanade and have dinner at Etrusco, one of Greece’s finest (Italian) restaurants, and you can also tan away on organised beaches, take your kids to the Aqualand Waterpark, have Chinese or Tex-Mex for dinner and go disco-hopping at night. Fortunately, you can skip all that as well!

Read here what others said about the Pelecas Country Club

Our wedding co-ordinator actually went the day before and found the hotel for us, without her detailed directions it would have taken us much longer to find the place. However the lack of a sign on the gates is by design - as the bar man/ receptionist told us that this kept out unwanted visitors. The apartment was excellent and adorned with antiques and books about Corfu architecture. Because it was our wedding night there was a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine and rose petals on the bed - a nice touch. The facilities were as expected - satellite tv and phone, separate toilet and shower. The toiletries were excellent. The brunch in the main dining room (excellent surroundings) was good. Definitely a place to stay for special occasions.
