If you want to be close to the sea, but far from the crowds; if instead of the eternal (Greek) postcard blue and white, you’re in for a palette of green; and if you are looking for authenticity, but you also appreciate elegance and luxury, then, the Pavezzo Country Retreat might be just the place for you. The adorable 19th century stone cottages were restored under the direction of photographer/owner Maria Matsa. Each has its own feel: some have the look of a traditional farmhouse, with bare stone walls and dark wood beamed ceilings, while others, with white washed walls and pale wood floors and beams, are done in a contemporary country style. Most have their own terrace with sweeping views over the hills (and some have a plunge pool thrown in as well!). A flowered terrace where breakfast is served next to the swimming pool, an elegant restaurant and a spa centre complete the picture of bliss.

What makes it special to me:

I fell in love with the Pavezzo Country Retreat just by seeing the pictures, and when I got there it turned out to be even better than I expected. The combination of quiet, charm, tradition, style, luxury and originality is amazing.

But what you should keep in mind:

You don't actually get a sea-view, but the views over the green hills are pretty amazing!

You will be treated to an excellent breakfast (including hearty pies, croissants, homemade biscuits and cake, and fresh orange juice), served (form 9h00 to 11h00) on the terrace or in the sitting room. Evening meals are served in the stylish “NoveCento” restaurant. It is a set menu, and you have to reserve in advance. You also have your kitchenette to prepare a meal or two, and you can walk over to the cute village taverna for some honest, traditional food.

The Pavezzo Country Retreat is at the edge of Katouna, a small and charming village up in the hills, just a few kilometres from the coast and not very far from the capital of Lefkada. The nearest beach is at 3 km, but for the most beautiful beaches the island is famous for, you have to drive further.

Lefkada is an island you can drive to – it is connected to the mainland by a long and narrow causeway and a floating bridge. The drive from Athens takes about 4 to 5 hours. You can also fly to the nearby airport of Preveza: there are domestic flights from Athens several times a week and in the summer quite a few international charters fly directly to Preveza. After you cross to the island, you should follow signs for Nidri from the town of Lefkada. After about 5 km you take a right for Katouna (it is at 3 km from the coast). Once you arrive in the village, you will see a small sign for the Pavezzo Country Retreat.

Lefkada is a wondrous green and mountainous island. The coast offers several stunning sandy beaches as well as protected little coves, while the inland is a heaven for walkers. The main town of Lefkada is on the northern tip of the island. It is friendly and lively, but it wouldn’t make the top-20 of charming island towns. The east and south coast of the island is lined with beautiful bays, small ports and seaside villages, and little coves and beaches. The western coast is wild and green, and barely developed. This is where you will find the most amazing beaches. Porto Katsiki all the way south is the best known and perhaps the most beautiful of the lot, but if you come during the busy summer months it gets very, very crowded. But you do have to go and see it once at least... Do also schedule some time to explore the rest of the island. The landscape is fabulous and you will come across some beautiful little mountain villages.

Thank you for having a wonderful business and for finding all these lovely small Greek hotels (we looked over your book which was in the dining room). Myself and Lionel had a wonderful holiday at the Pavezzo retreat, it was a beautiful place and our house was amazing, we moved from Avra on the first day as it was too small and upgraded to Aknocula (I can't spell it but it means vine flower) it was the new house just built with an amazing Jacuzzi/ pool with fibre optic lights. The staff were very helpful (especially Apostolos) and were lovely people. We have already thoroughly recommended the retreat to friends being a perfect getaway from it all holiday in beautiful surroundings. My only suggestion would be to have beauty treatments available at the spa, the only treatment available was a massage (which was lovely) but had there been other treatments (facials, pedicures, etc.) I would have certainly indulged.
