At first sight, Apanema Resort may not look very different from other hotels on Mykonos – white cubic houses set around a swimming pool. But ways have been found to set his hotel apart. Its 17 bedrooms have been decorated in a fresh-modern romantic style with soft shades of blue and green, and furnished with smart, design furniture. The poolside restaurant and terraces are equally stylish. On the surface, it all comes across as quite trendy, but in fact the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious. Contrary to most hotels on Mykonos, Apanema Resort is owner-run. George Akrivos has taken a hands-on approach, taking care of his guests and all day-to-day business personally. This is one of the rare places on the island where the trendiness is easygoing, and where even if the setting is ever so ‘cool’, the welcome is always warm.

What makes it special to me:

Like most hotels on Mykonos Apanema Resort is stylish and trendy. But it is not the kind of place where people go to see and be seen; it is more relaxed and laid-back. Other strong points are the great quality mattresses and the wonderful swimming pool.

But what you should keep in mind:

The stretch of coastline below the hotel isn't particularly nice.

Breakfast is served from 8h00 to 13h00. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and offers Mediterranian and international cuisine. Of course there is also an excellent choice of restaurants in Mykonos town.

Apanema Resort is situated above the coastal road overlooking the sea. The little town of Mykonos is about ten minutes’ walk. (If you walk at night, take a flashlight, as the road is not well lit.) The best beaches on the island are about 10-15 minutes by car.

Mykonos can be reached either by conventional ferry boat (about six hours), high-speed boat (about three hours) or plane (several flights a day from Athens; in the summer there are also direct flights from abroad). If you let George know what time your ferry or plane arrives he will come and meet you. If you arrive with your own car, you will find the hotel on the road between the new port and Mykonos town, about 1 km from the town.

Mykonos is an island that barely needs an introduction. One of the most famous, liveliest, and most glamorous of all Greek islands, it is the ultimate holiday destination in the Cyclades. It is beautiful, it is fun and the beaches are among the best in Greece. It is a place to dance through the night, sleep late, breakfast on croissants, yogurt and fresh fruit salad, shop for some designer wear, work on your tan and show it off, sip cocktails while the sun sets and choose between lobster, fresh pasta or sushi for dinner. It first became en vogue in the 1960s when the gay and jet-setting crowd brought style into the island and turned it into the trendiest spot in the Aegean – a tag held until today.

The island has never fallen prey to the mega hotel developments and package deal tourism that definitely scarred some other Greek islands, though it has become pretty built-up. If you want peace and quiet, better not go in July or August. Watch out for weekends in June and September as well, when Athenians show up en masse. That said, there are so many excellent beaches to choose from, that as long as you avoid a few ‘classics’ like Paradise and Super Paradise, you will always find a good spot to spread your beach towel, be it on the white sand or on a rented sun bed.

Mykonos offers about all the entertainment you can expect on a holiday island, and it will really depend on your mood and tastes how you are going to fill your days and nights, and whether you will actually sleep during the day or during the night.  Do include a trip to the nearby isle of Delos, the legendary birthplace of Apollon and Artemis, and a major spiritual and political centre of Ancient Greece.
