Situated in a quiet residential neighbourhood of Kifisia (one of Athens’ most upscale suburbs), Coco-Mat Hotel Nafsika is the kind of hotel that makes you feel relaxed and at home, not least because of its amazing beds (mattresses made from natural materials are the main product of the Coco-Mat company), but also because of the friendly and easygoing atmosphere that reigns. You get the feeling the moment you step into the entry lobby of the hotel, which doubles as living/dining room. There are comfortable sofas to sink into, books to grab from the library, a computer corner, an honesty bar with drinks and nibbles, and doors that open to a shady terrace with a small herbal garden. Bedrooms are not huge, but so well laid-out, fresh looking and comfortable that you won’t mind. All rooms come with a balcony or terrace, and have impeccable bathrooms with walk-in showers. The rooms on the higher floors have far-reaching views; ground-floor rooms are a little darker, but have greenery-fringed private terraces. Coco-Mat Nafsika doesn’t have the feeling of a typical hotel, nor is it the kind of place that tries hard to stand out by being hip and trendy. It is simply relaxed, inviting and wonderful!
The relaxed and friendly atmosphere of Coco-Mat Hotel Nafsika, the clean and fresh feeling, and of course, the wonderful beds.
The bedrooms are city-style compact, while the suite is more of a large room. Also, bear in mind that you should count about 30 minutes travel time to get to the centre of Athens.
En-suite bathroom (shower; the suite has a whirlpool bath)
DVD player (on request)
One room has wheelchair access
Massage (on request)
Breakfast is served in the ground-floor living room of the hotel and you can take it out to the terrace. With lots of healthy and delicious choices, it is a celebration of Greek tradition. The restaurant of Coco-mat Hotel Nafsika is open for lunch and dinner. The (smallish) menu features Greek and Mediterranean dishes, tradition with a modern twist, all prepared with mostly fresh, organic Greek produce. I had a light lunch sharing a few salads and starters – it was delicious.
Children are welcome at Coco-mat Hotel Nafsika. Some of the rooms have a very comfortable extra (sofa) bed for a child, and the rooms with twin beds are convenient for kids to share. A cot/crib is available on request (when you make your booking).
The general atmosphere at the hotel is definitely child-friendly, and the quieter environment outside the centre of Athens is something you may appreciate as well if you are travelling with young children. Something else that parents may appreciate that the breakfast and other meals served in the restaurant are made with fresh, high quality ingredients, so your children will eat healthy here! The restaurant has a high chair for toddlers.
A day (or more) in Athens
Take the train to Athens (the station is only a few minute’s walk away and trains go every five or ten minutes) to visit the Acropolis and the Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora, the National Museum and the Benaki Museum. Walk around in Plaka and Monastiraki and shop for craft and artwork, handmade jewellery, worry beads, olive oil soap, bric-a-brac and antiques. Do your fashion shopping in designer boutiques in the trendy Kolonaki neighbourhood. At night, try catching a dance, music or theatre performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus Theatre (only during the Athens Summer Festival). Or see what’s going on at venues like the Megaron Mousikis concert hall, the Half Note Jazz Club, Technopolis in Gazi or the Onassis Cultural Centre. And for total immersion in Greek culture, go for after-midnight live Bouzouki music. Treat yourself to a taxi back to the hotel; they’re not expensive.
Grab and bicycle and The centre of Kifisia is a 15-minute walk away. Go for fashion shopping, pick a nice shady terrace for a coffee or lunch, buy traditional sweets at the charmingly old-fashioned Varsos shop, and visit the Goulandris Museum of Natural History. On summer evenings, go and see a movie in an open-air cinema.
Mountains and nature are only 15 minutes by car. Enjoy long walks or go biking in the forests of the royal estate of Tatoi. You can also sign up for rock climbing in Varimbombi, or for hiking or caving in the National Park of Mount Parnitha.
Hotel Nafsika is in a residential part of Kifisia, an upscale northern suburb of Athens. It is not the kind of location that would first come to your mind for a stay in Greece’s capital. But the quietness of the neighbourhood, the easy connections to downtown Athens, Piraeus and the airport, the nearby centre of Kifisia with its numerous shops and bars, and the bicycles parked in front which you can use to get around, make it an attractive alternative choice to staying in a hotel in the centre of Athens.
Hotel Nafsika is about 10 minutes’ walk from the KAT metro station (and 15 from the Kifissia urban railway station). It is best to take a taxi from the latter (or directly from the airport).
