My favourite island in the Cyclades? That would be Serifos. And my favourite beach on Serifos? Hmm, actually, I don’t have one… The island has so many wonderful beaches that I find it impossible to pick a winner. That said, Vagia Beach is among my top choices. With coarse sand and white pebbles, and the clearest of seawaters, it is gorgeous. Coco-Mat Eco Residences Serifos hotel has a glorious setting right by this beach. It is a group of late 19th century miners’ houses that were recently restored and turned into a relaxed trendy (and eco-friendly) hotel. It’s the perfect place to stay if you want truly laid-back beach holidays with nothing to worry about. Beautiful “residences” done in an inviting modern island style look out over the sea and offer great comfort: heavenly beds (from the Coco-Mat brand, of course), nice bathrooms and modern kitchenettes and sea-facing terraces. All residences are on two levels, with one or two bedrooms on the (coolest) lower lever and a living room upstairs – some have a bedroom on a higher level and from the window you see nothing but the sea. Steps lead down to Vagia Beach, where you can soak up the sun on Coco-Mat daybeds and dip into the sea to cool off. What else could you wish for during your vacations in Greece?
The incredible beachfront location of Coco-mat Eco Residences Serifos, the stylish charm of the hotel, the amazing food and the wonderful beds. Bring your flip-flops, a few good books and a person you love, and you'll be in heaven.
Vagia is absolutely beautiful, but behind the beach there are a few unfinished buildings, one of which is quite close to the hotel.

You will eat so well at Coco-mat Eco Residences Serifos. There is a small and pretty, semi-covered restaurant with about ten tables and views over the beach, but you can also ask for meals to be brought to your residence, or, for the ultimately romantic dining experience, ask for a table to be prepared for you on the beach.
For breakfast you can help yourself from a well-assorted buffet with wonderful fresh, local products, fresh juice and home-baked savoury pies, cakes and sweets. For lunch and dinner the restaurant serves excellent Mediterranean dishes. I had dinner at the hotel with friends, and got to taste a lot of different dishes; everything was refined and absolutely delicious. A risotto with goat cheese, lemon and capers, parpadelle with fresh tomato and basil, sea bass carpaccio with marinated seaweed, a fish of the day with quinoa salad, Valrhona chocolate mousse and a lemon cake/mousse. All to die for. One of the, if not THE, best meal I have had in my over 15 summers on Serifos.
The residences have kitchenettes (equipped on request), so if you are in the mood, you can also cook a meal or two yourself.
Not far from Coco-mat Eco Residences Serifos, at Ganema (another one of Serifos’ most beautiful beaches) there are two good Greek restaurants. One (which opens only when the owners are in the mood) is a simple Greek beach taverna serving mezedes (Greek tapas), salads, grilled meats and a few traditional home cooked dishes, and the other restaurant, serving fantastic Greek dishes prepared with mainly local, organic ingredients, is situated a little higher on the hill and has great views over the bay.
Children are welcome at Coco-mat Eco Residences Serifos, but there are no special facilities for them, and the hotel is not really considered suitable for children under the age of ten. There are a few 2-bedroom residences that are ideal for families with children of ten years and above.
Coco-mat Eco Residences Serifos is set right above Vagia, one of the best beaches on Serifos. There is some unfinished construction set back from the beach, but it still is an absolutely beautiful place, with coarse sand on one side and pebbles on the other, and in the middle one small cabin selling drinks and snacks, and renting a few umbrellas and sun beds. (The hotel has its own sun beds with shade.) The location is wonderfully quiet – it really has the ‘in the middle of nowhere’ feeling – but that also means that you really need a car (or moped) to get around. The port of Serifos (and the restaurants, shops, bars etc) is 6 km away.
There is no airport on Serifos, so the only way to get there is by ferry. During the summer season, the fast ones go once or twice a day and take you to the island in about 2,5 hours. The normal ferries take a bit over 4 hours. Arrival transfers can be arranged, but I recommend that if you don’t come with your own car you rent one in the port. (Book in advance!) From the port of Serifos, drive in the direction of Livadakia, Kalo Ambeli, Vagia and Ganema. The hotel is at Vagia Beach, below the road, on your left.
